After joining the British Foreign Service in 1960, he enjoyed a spectacularly successful diplomatic career, serving as private secretary for Overseas Affairs to two prime ministers and as ambassador to Hungary (1980-83) and the Soviet Union (1985-88). He was knighted in 1985. Sir Bryan Cartledge KCMG (born 10 June 1931), is a former British diplomat and academic. After studying at Hurstpierpoint College and St John's College, Cambridge, he took research posts at St Antony's College, Oxford and the Hoover Institute at Stanford University. He was inspired to become a diplomat after being invited to assist the former British prime minister and foreign secretary Sir Anthony Eden with his memoirs.
