There will be a time when one bud looks ready but the rest of the plant will not be. You just wait it out. It's done when the new ones stop appearing and the rest are almost all orange/brown. You're also correct about the deficiency but it looks more like a magnesium deficiency too, so yes some Cal-Mag is in need.
